Count Down to Run
TV personality Carol Vorderman began the countdown to this year’s Run for the Future in Bristol and encouraged people to join her in the 5km event in support of prostate cancer.
She also appealed to women in the West to talk to the men in their lives about their prostates during March, which has been designated Prostate Cancer awareness month.
The event is again being organised by Bristol Rotarians to raise funds for the Bristol Urological Institute Prostate Cancer Appeal.
Over the past four years it’s raised over £175,000, which is already funding research into the detection and treatment of a disease which claims the lives on more than 10,000 men in the UK every year.
Run for the Future also encourages men over 50 to have regular PSA blood checks with their GP’s to guard against prostate cancer – early detection greatly improves the odds of successful treatment. It’s estimated that a national screening programme could reduce the number of deaths by 50%!
“If we can get more families talking about this disease and persuade men to have regular checks we could save thousands of lives – you don’t have to be good at maths to work out why that makes sense,” says Carol.
The 2010 Run for the Future will take place on the Downs in Bristol on Sunday, 19 September.
One major sponsor has already been signed up for this year’s event and the Marriott Royal in Bristol has again adopted Run for the Future and the BUI’s Prostate Cancer Appeal as its charity for the year.
