Treadmill Marathon
Members at Cadbury House Hotel, Health Club and Spa literally ran round the clock for charity when they took part in treadmill marathon to raise awareness of and money for prostate cancer research and treatment.
It was all in aid of Run for the Future, the annual 5km run on the Downs in Bristol organised by Bristol Rotarians, which raises money for the Bristol Urological Institute Prostate Cancer Charity Appeal.
More than 10,000 men in the UK die from the disease every year, but there is no national screening programme available on the NHS.
Members of the Club, the gym at Cadbury House Hotel, Health Club and Spa, ran for 30 minutes each on the treadmill, covering a distance of around 180 miles. Those not taking part were encouraged to become sponsors.
Club Manager, Jason Eaton, said the members really enjoyed the challenge. “Everyone was really up for it and it focuses attention on a really worthwhile cause.
“As a gym we naturally encourage all our male members to get fit and look after themselves, but prostate cancer is one of those subjects men won’t readily talk about. If this challenge helps save just one life by raising awareness, then it’s been worth the effort.”
Money raised by Run for the Future over the last three years is currently funding joint research between the BUI at Southmead Hospital and the University of the West of England into earlier diagnosis and treatment of the disease.
Cadbury House Hotel, Health Club and Spa’s support doesn’t end with the treadmill challenge – they are also asking every guest staying at the hotel to put their spare change in special Run for the Future envelopes and are also planning to enter a team in the event itself.
This year’s Run for the Future, which is sponsored by Spire Hospital, takes place at 12 noon on Sunday, 20 September. For further information or to register to take part visit www.runforthefuture.org or ring the Run for the Future Office on 0117 959 6328.
