Pedal for Prostate Cancer

Smiley Miley, better known as Tony Miles, led a 10 strong team of riders on a Pedal for Prostate challenge from Bristol to Newquay to raise money for prostate cancer research.

Former Radio One DJ Mike Read joined the team at the start of the ride, which was also re-tracing the steps of the first Radio One Roadshow trip - 36 years ago!

Tony, who’s now 62, survived prostate cancer five years ago and wanted to help raise awareness of prostate cancer, which claims 10,000 lives every year in the UK, and encourage men to ask their GP’s for a PSA blood test.

The team was raising funds for the Bristol Urological Institute’s Prostate Cancer Care and Research Appeal, which is supported by Run for the Future. The appeal is chaired by Tony’s brother John Miles, who has also survived the disease.

“Not only did we want this ride to raise money, but we also wanted to raise awareness about prostate cancer,” says Tony. “I may not have even been here if it had not been for the early warning from the PSA test - that’s why men from the age of 50 upwards should be screened regularly.”

Tony, who underwent a hernia operation just a fortnight before the ride, used an electric assisted bike, complete with wicker basket for donations, to ensure he made the trip.

Full details of the Pedal for Prostate challenge are available on www.pedalforprostate.co.uk . Tony hopes it will become an annual event.
