Rugby Cup Match
Two Bristol rugby clubs are staging a special match in memory of long standing supporter Derek Mayer, who recently lost his battle with prostate cancer.
Frampton Cotterell and Broad Plain rugby clubs will play for the ‘Derek Mayer Memorial Cup’ at Frampton’s School Road ground on Sunday, 19 April at 2.00pm.
The organisers aim to raise awareness of prostate cancer amongst players and visitors and funds for the Bristol Urological Institute’s Prostate Cancer Care and Research Appeal.
With Bristol’s Run for the Future only five months away, the teams will be also be promoting the BUI Prostate Cancer Appeal charity event. Backed by Carol Vorderman, the Bristol Rotary organised 5km run has raised £130,000 over the past three years. This year’s event takes place on the Downs in Bristol on Sunday, 20 September.
Derek Mayer, a long standing supporter of local rugby, held the positions of chairman and president of Frampton Cotterell and was a past treasurer for Broad Plain.
His son Paul Mayer says: “Both clubs involved are keen to support the prostate cancer charity and to increase awareness of the disease. Raising awareness amongst the players and their families is vital as statistics show prostate cancer affects a large number of men at some point in their life.”
The Derek Mayor Memorial Cup trophy will be presented to the winners at every future meeting between the two teams.
