Pounds for Prostate Cancer

Bristol Hotel Looks To The Future….

One of Bristol’s leading City Centre hotels had adopted Run for the Future as its charity for the year.

The Marriott Royal Hotel on College Green is supporting the Bristol Rotary organised event, which raises funds for the BUI Bristol Prostate Cancer Charity Appeal.

The event – now in its fourth year – is due to take place on the Downs in Bristol on Sunday, 20 September. So far the 5km Run has raised more than £130,000, which is being used to fund vital research into the early diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

John Hazard, General Manager of the Hotel, said it wasn’t a difficult decision.

“We have long standing links with Rotary – this was the venue where Bristol Rotary Club first met over 90 years ago and there is a plaque on the wall commemorating the event,” he said.

“We try to support a local charity and Run for the Future does a tremendous job raising awareness of prostate cancer and helping fund cutting edge research.”

The Marriott Royal is also hosting the official launch of the 2009 Run on Thursday, 19 March, and will be encouraging all its guests to add a discretionary £1 to their bills for the charity.

More than 10,000 men in the UK die every year from prostate cancer. At present, there is no formal screening programme for the disease. Only one man in 12 in the UK has the PSA blood test, which can be an early indicator of the disease, despite the fact that early detection greatly improves the chances of successful treatment.

This year’s Run for the Future is being sponsored by Spire Healthcare, who have 36 hospitals around the UK, including The Glen in Bristol.

The launch of this year’s event will be carried out by celebrity Carol Vorderman, who took part in last year’s 5km Run. “This is an event for the whole of the family and a chance for women to support the men in their lives,” she says.
