Spire Sponsorship Treble
Spire Support Prostate Run
Spire Healthcare, one of the leading private hospital providers in the UK, is to sponsor Bristol’s Run for the Future for a third year.
The 2009 race will take place on the Downs in Bristol on Sunday, 20 September and will again raise funds for the BUI Bristol Prostate Cancer Charity Appeal.
Over the past three years the Bristol Rotary organized event has raised more than £130,000, which is now funding a special joint research project with the University of the West of England into early diagnosis of the disease.
Every year prostate cancer affects more than 35,000 men in the UK and more than 10,000 die. At present, there is no formal screening programme for prostate cancer and only one man in 12 in the UK has the PSA blood test, which can be an early indicator of the disease, despite the fact that early detection greatly improves the chances of successful treatment.
Spire Healthcare, which now has 36 hospitals across the UK, including the Glen in Bristol, says they’re support Run for the future because it’s vital to raise awareness of the disease.
"Spire Bristol Hospital is delighted to sponsor Run for the Future again. We will also have 20 members of staff taking part to help raise money and want to encourage people to join us on the day or make a donation,” said Hospital Director Rob Anderson.
This year’s Run for the Future event will be official launched on 19 March at the Marriott Royal Hotel in Bristol by celebrity Carol Vorderman, who took part in last year’s 5km run. “This is an event for the whole of the family and a chance for women to support the men in their lives,” says Carol. “If we can get men and their families talking about prostate cancer we can make a real difference.”
March is also Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and on Saturday the 28th a Symposium on Prostate Cancer Research in the South West is taking place at UWE where it will be possible to find out everything you ever wanted to know about the disease.
