Steamed up for Run
A traditional steam funfair, complete with steam yachts, gallopers and chair-o-planes, will be supporting this year’s Run for the Future in aid of prostate cancer research.
Carters Famous Royal Berkshire Steam Fair will be set up on the Downs in Bristol from Friday, 5 September, for the weekend and will be donating part of its proceeds to the Bristol Rotarians’ event, which takes place on Sunday the 7th.
Anastasia Carter, who took over the fair following the death of her husband eight years ago from cancer, at the age of 58, says some of the staff will try to take part in the 5km Run, if they are not working.
“We normally travel around London and the South East, so this is our first visit to Bristol and we’d like to support the community,” says Anastasia, who has a family member with prostate cancer.
Run for the Future, which is being sponsored this year by Spire Hospital, has raised more than £100,000 over the past two years. The money goes to the BUI Bristol Prostate Cancer Appeal at Southmead Hospital and funds research projects which could lead to the introduction of a national screening programme.
Ian Beattie, the Run organiser and Rotarian, says 10,000 men in the UK die every year from the disease. “Run for the Future is a family event for everyone. We want to get men and their wives, girlfriends and partners to talk about prostate cancer and ask their GPs for a PSA blood test. If it’s detected early, prostate cancer can be successfully treated.”
