Redwood Hotel Supports Cancer Appeal
Guests staying at a Bristol Hotel are to be asked to make discretionary donation towards research into the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer.
Redwood Hotel and Country Club has become an official supporter of Run for the Future and will ask people staying with them to add a £1 contribution to their bill in aid of the BUI Bristol Prostate Cancer Appeal.
The Hotel’s management has also entered a corporate team into the 5km run, which is organised by Bristol Rotarians and takes place on the Downs in Bristol on Sunday, 7 September.
General Manager, Gordon Riddell, says they will also be asking Country Club members to take part. “This is a great opportunity to draw attention to something men and their families rarely talk about. We hope our guests will add a discretionary donation and our members come out to run alongside the management team.”
More than 10,000 men in the UK die every year from prostate cancer, yet there is no national screening programme available on the NHS. Men have a one in 11 chance at the age of 50 of getting the disease.
Run for the Future has raised more than £100,000 over the last two years, which is now funding a special joint research project between the University of the West of England and the Bristol Urological institute. Part of the research involves testing urine as an indicator of prostate cancer.
Run organiser and Rotarian, Ian Beattie, says the event is one for all the family. “It’s not just the men who are the victims of this silent killer – they leave behind families, so we want wives, partners and children to persuade the men in their lives to ask their GP for a PSA blood test. If prostate cancer is detected early enough it can be successfully treated.”
