Run for the Future 2007

Rotarians in Bristol have announced plans to stage another Run for the Future later this year to help fight prostate cancer.

Last year’s run raised nearly £63,000 for the Bristol Urological Prostate Cancer Appeal and the organisers of this year’s event hope to double that figure.

The 2007 Run for the Future will take place on Sunday, 16th September, and funds raised will go towards research into the diagnosis and treatment of the disease, which has a higher death rate than breast cancer in women.

More than 30,000 men in the UK suffer from prostate cancer every year, leading to more than 10,000 deaths!

This week is prostate cancer awareness week and Noel Edmonds, the celebrity host of ‘Deal or No Deal’, has more reason than most to support the Bristol Rotary appeal.

“Prostate cancer is very close to my heart as my dear Dad died from this terrible disease,” he said. “In those days, there wasn’t the awareness or the research projects that exist today. Local vital research will be greatly assisted by the money raised by Run for the Future.”

Event co-ordinator, Ian Beattie, says this year’s event will be an opportunity for the community as a whole to support research into what has been dubbed a silent killer.

“A 50 year old man has a one in 11 chance of being diagnosed with prostate cancer, but it’s a disease that many do not want to talk about. We hope we can raise awareness and encourage men to talk to their GP’s about having a simple diagnostic blood test – it could save their life.

“Run for the Future is about providing hope – for the men who suffer from the disease and for their families, which is why we hope it will become a major regional initiative and one day grow into a national appeal,” said Ian.

John Miles, chairman of the BUI Prostate Cancer Appeal, who discovered he had the prostate cancer seven years ago, says its vital to raise awareness.

“Whilst raising money is important, if men are aware there is a very simple test available, they can get an early diagnosis and the chances of being treated successfully are greatly enhanced.”
