Run for the Future Auction

Run for the Future Auction

Supporters of this year’s Run for the Future have a unique opportunity to get their hands on something money ordinarily can’t buy whilst also helping a charity, which could save the lives of thousands of men.

This year’s Run for the Future, in aid of the BUI Bristol Prostate Cancer Appeal, takes place on Sunday, 7 September, on the Downs in Bristol. Every year more than 35,000 men get the disease and more than 14,000 die, but there is no formal screening programme for prostate cancer as there is for breast cancer in women.

Up until a week before this year’s Run there will be the exclusive chance to take part in an auction and bid for items that simply would not be available elsewhere - and the money raised will go towards further research into the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer.

Celebrities Noel Edmonds and Carol Vorderman are both supporting Run for the Future and Carol will be running in the event for the first time this year.

Both have donated personal items to the auction, plus VIP tickets to their respective shows – Deal or No Deal and Countdown – which include a chance to see behind the scenes and meet the stars themselves.

Run for the Future is now in its third year and the total of £100,000 raised from the first two events is being used to fund joint research projects between the Bristol Urological Institute at Southmead Hospital and the University of the West of England.

Men taking part in the 2008 Run for the Future will be offered free blood tests on the day to see if they are at risk from prostate cancer!

Ian Beattie, the 2008 Run co-ordinator, says the event is designed to give hope to families. “The problem is men are, in general, largely ignorant of the disease. We hope to get families talking about it and that women and children will persuade the men in their lives to take their health seriously.”

In addition to taking part in this year’s event, Carol Vorderman has also made a personal appeal in a special video for people to take part, which can be seen on the Run for the Future website.

For further information, or to participate in the event, visit the website at www.runforthefuture.org or phone the Run for the Future office on 0117 9596328. Anyone wishing to take part can register on the day.

There are five lots in the Run for the Future auction.

1. Shirt worn by Noel Edmonds on Deal or No Deal.
2. Diamante bracelet donated by Carol Vorderman
3. A pair of VIP tickets to a recording of Deal or No Deal, to include a behind the scenes tour and a chance to meet Noel Edmonds
4. A pair of VIP tickets to a recording of Countdown, to include a chance to meet Carol Vorderman (To be taken before end of 2008)
5. A football signed by the Bristol City 2007/8 squad.

To place a bid simply call the Run for the Future office on 0117 959 5527 or email runforthefuture@bui.ac.uk with details of the item and how much you want to bid.

The auction will close at midnight on Sunday, 31 August. Successful bidders will be contacted in advance and will have the opportunity to be presented with their items at the Run for the Future on Sunday, 7 September.
