Zip Sliding Away

Tommy Banner and Pete Budd from the Wurzels were fitted out with harnesses and helmets at Bristol City Football Club in preparation for a zip slide challenge in aid of prostate cancer research.

Dare devils and thrill seekers were given the chance to slide down a wire rope from the top of the Dolman Stand across the Ashton Gate pitch to raise money for research into a disease which kills more than 10,000 men every year in the UK!

The zip slide event was held on Saturday, 12 July, in aid of the BUI Bristol Prostate Cancer Appeal, which has been adopted as the charity of the year by both the Wurzels and Bristol City.

The Football Club also appealed to its fans to have a go on the zip slideto raise thousands of pounds to help pay for vital research into early diagnosis and treatment.

Last year more than 30,000 men in the UK were diagnosed with prostate cancer and more than a third will die.

Tommy Banner and Pete Budd have been active supporters of the BUI Bristol Prostate Cancer Appeal ever since a random check revealed that Tommy had the disease. His operation was successfully carried out at the BUI at Southmead Hospital.

“I didn’t have any of the symptoms and felt perfectly fit and well, but fortunately it was caught early and I’m still here to tell other men about the importance of getting checked out. Getting a simple blood test could be a life saver” said Tommy (pictured left).

"Before I was diagnosed with prostate cancer I knew absolutely nothing about the condition. So I'm very keen to support the BUI, and help raise awareness of its work,” he said.

Money raised by the zip slide event will go towards improving the care of patients in Bristol and the South West as well as support research into other urological cancers and urinary incontinence.

Anyone wishing to support the BUI Prostate Cancer Appeal further can take part in Bristol Rotary’s Run for the Future on the Downs in Bristol on Sunday, 7 September. Visit www.runforthefuture.org for further details.
