The first Run for the Future which took place on Bristol’s Downs on the 10th September 2006 was inspired by a need to raise men’s awareness about Prostate Cancer to the level of women’s awareness about Breast Cancer.
Rotary in Bristol took up the challenge and developed and organised the event as a 5km “fun” run, jog or walk for all the family to raise money for the BUI Bristol Prostate Cancer Appeal of our local Bristol Urological Institute at Southmead Hospital (charity No. 1025402).
The next Run for the Future will be held at 12 noon on Sunday 7 September 2008.
Nearly 600 “runners”, young and old took part in this “fun” run, jog or walk and enjoyed themselves immensely.
The sucess of the first year was followed by Run for the Future 2007 which took place on Sunday 16th September 2007. Again, a staggering number took part, with many families and groups getting involved to remember loved ones and friends who suffered from prostate cancer.
To date, the two events have not only raised awareness about the symptoms of Prostate Cancer for men to look out for, and about the availability of simple tests to aid prostate cancer diagnosis, but have generated over £100,000 for our Bristol Urological Institute Prostate Cancer Appeal.
Photos tell the story better than words about the event, so here are some of the happy entrants from 2006 [2.1mb pdf] and 2007 [4mb pdf].
